Children’s Educational Network and Septium:
Helping Children use Internet Safely |
| |
|
| |
Children's Educational Network (CEN) is a software company developing and marketing a suite of Internet software products that provide children a safe platform to use the Internet. These tools help parents accelerate their children's education, entertainment, and exploration of the "Information Superhighway" free from hate, violence, pornography and online predators. |

Removing the Speed Bumps for a Child-friendly Internet |
| |
|
| |
Recently, CEN acquired the TUKI Browser (The Ultimate Kids' Internet), which combines the most fun and safest content on the web for kids, deemed child appropriate based on a kid-safe content policy. Their goal was to have a full-scale product that featured interchangeable themes, Internet filter, parental safety controls, safe email, chore reminders, encouraging words and talking animated characters. |
| |
|
| |
After an unsuccessful attempt to add features to the software, CEN was concerned that a re-write would be needed to extend the product. Septium was asked to evaluate the code base, the scalability of the product and make a recommendation before a significant investment in a re-write. |

The Results |
| |
|
| |
Septium's project goal was to ensure that CEN could take its browser to the next level. They evaluated the code base, the scalability of the product, interviewed the support personnel, reviewed the operations statistics, assessed the necessity, and cost effectiveness of a re-write. Septium’s evaluation resulted in the following business recommendations:
- The code met acceptable guidelines. Although the code was not well documented, it followed commonly accepted coding guidelines; and the product performed well the in the production environment.
- A re-write is not necessary. Utilizing highly skilled developers familiar with the development technologies to add the needed functionality, CEN could avoid the high cost of a re-write.
- Scalability was limited. Finding a serious scalability issue in the product, Septium consultants recommended a redesign to eliminate the scalability bottleneck
|
| |
Armed with the report from Septium, the pleasantly surprised CEN put Septium to task to deliver on its recommendations. Utilizing its skilled developer group in India, Septium implemented all the required new functionality and created a scalable product within 45 days. Septium beat the project timelines, and met CEN’s cost and quality expectations. Ultimately, Septium was able to assist CEN in offering a robust, scalable product to ensure that children traveled safely on the Information Superhighway. |
